I have always loved to draw. I have a
wonderful high school art teacher to
thank for that development, Martha Lalka.
She encouraged me onto Virginia
Commonwealth University receiving a BFA.
Though my concentration was in
metalworks, I continued to draw. Three
careers later I still love to draw. In
the past three years I have been
fortunate to spend a lot of time with
the talented teachers and students at
the Studio School. I had painted much
as I draw with plenty of white showing,
since I have learned to layer
transparents and opaques and train my
eyes to see abstract shapes in
everything. Yet my imagery remains
figurative, illustrative, or inspired
by the beautiful local landscapes or
from my numerous travels. I feel
fortunate to have tapped this “talent.”
Everyday, at every corner, with every
thought, I think about the
interpretation of a story from three
deminsions to two. With another
love, creative writing, I keep an
active list of characters and scenes
playing in my head; it is full to
bursting most days.
